Shillong

Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya (aka “The Abode of Clouds”). Surrounded by rolling hills Shillong is also known as “Scotland of the East”. Cherrapunji credited as being the wettest place on Earth is situated at a distance of 54 km from Shillong. Mawlynnong, whioch is famous for its matrilineal society as well as having been dubbed India’s cleanest village is also not far from Shillong. There are many tourist attractions within and in the outskirts of Shillong. Most famous among them are Elephant Falls, Shillong peak, Umiam Lake, Wards Lake.It is one of best hill stations in the North East.

How to reach: The nearest railway station is Guwahati. It is 104 km from Shillong and very well connected with all major cities of India. Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) has bus services coordinated with train arrivals at Guwahati.

Best season to visit: The best time for sightseeing and adventure activities is between March to June, to visit the waterfalls and enjoy the gorgeous rain the best time is between June to October, to enjoy cold weather and best season for honeymoon is in between October to February.

Gangtak

Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim and is located in the eastern Himalayan range, at an elevation of 1,650 m. In the early 20th century, Gangtok served as a major stopover on the trade route between Lhasa in Tibet and cities such as Calcutta (which is now known as Kolkata) in British ruled India. The vicinity of higher Himalayan peaks and year round mild temperature have made Gangtok the centre of Sikkim’s tourism industry. Gangtok is also a centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning, with the presence of several beautiful monasteries, religious educational institutions. The majestic view of Kanchenjunga, the third-tallest peak in the world is visible from Gangtok. Gangtok is surrounded by some densely forested regions, consisting of deciduous forests of poplar, birch, oak, and elm, as well as evergreen, coniferous trees of the wet alpine zone.It is wondering and beautifu hill stations in the North East.

How to reach: Bagdogra  is the airport nearest to Gangtok which  is about 124 kilometres away. By Train. The nearest railway station to Gangtok is about 148 kilometres away in New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri. Most of the tourists prefer a road trip from Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kolkata.

Best season to visit: The best time to visit Gangtok is in between October and June. During this the weather is pleasant, the sky is clear.

Tawang

If you are planning to witness the beauty of the range of the Himalaya then go  to Tawang, this beautifull hill station in the state of Arunachal Pradesh with an elevation of approximately 3,048 metres will not disappoint you. In December and January every year Tawang experiences  heavy snow fall.  Tawang Monastery is said  to be the biggest Buddhist monastery in the world outside of Lhasa, Tibet. Tawang was the birthplace of sixth Dalai Lama. In March the Monpas celebrate the Losar festival and the whole town becomes a riot of color like a canvas.

How to reach: The closest airport is Tezpur 160 kms away. Jeeps or taxis are available there to take you to Tawang. Nearest railway station is Rangapara.

Best season to visit: The best time to visit Tawang is summer months between March and October.

Aizawl

Aizawl the capital of Mizoram state, is situated at about 1132 meters above sea level. With a history of 112 years this beautiful city is set on ridges of steep hills. Aizawl is the political and cultural and also the commercial hub of the State. The city surrounded by the craggy peaks of Durtlang is on the north, on the east the deep green valley of the river Tuirial and on the west the river Tlawng with its lush emerald valleys. Picturesque scenery and peaceful surroundings with mild and enjoyable weather throughout the year make Aizawl  an ideal hill station for tourists looking for solitude, clean and fresh environment and new destinations.

How to reach:  It is arilinked by daily flights from Kolkata and Guwahati.  It is connected to Imphal by air and it accessible from Shillong, Guwahati and Silchar by road.

Best season to visit: Best time to visit is between November to March.

Pelling

Pelling is a town in West Sikkim. Some stunning views of snow peaked Kanchenjunga may be viewed at close quarters from Pelling. The land around Pelling is still a virgin territory and is bathed with alpine vegetation, with numerous waterfalls lining the hillside. In the months of winter, Pelling sometimes experiences snowfall. Pelling is an ideal destination for trekkers and other peripatetic adventurers and act as the base for the strenuous and arduous treks in West Sikkim.

How to reach:  The nearest airport is Bagdogra which is about 79kms from Pelling. The nearest railway station is Jalpaiguri which is 95kms from Pelling. Private cars, jeeps, taxis, or tourist mini buses and coaches are available from both Bagdogra and Jalpaiguri.

Best season to visit: To witness some of the stunning views of the Mountain Khangchendzonga, the ideal time to is between mid September to mid December. Otherwise one can visit Pelling between mid February to May and then from mid September to December.
